ST GEORGE'S COLLEGE, HARARE, ZIMBABWE
Established in 1896, St George's College is a private Jesuit boys high school in Harare and the oldest independent school in Zimbabwe. Following a Strategic Development Plan analysis of existing school building usage undertaken by Stone/Beattie, the College opted to construct a new purpose built science centre (5No Chemistry laboratories, 3No Biology laboratories and 3No Physics laboratories, each discipline with it’s own designated prep rooms, staff rooms and offices, and cloistered pupil locker areas) to compliment the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education programme promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative, thus 'freeing up' previously converted classrooms back to non-science academic teaching rooms.
As the selected site backed onto the steep gradient of Hartmann Hill, the architectural design solution utilised half-levels connected by stairways and ramp between each floor within a triple volume atrium providing access for the disabled and movement of teaching equipment.
We provided full architectural services for design, working drawings and schedules; co-ordination of civils, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services; co-ordinating the quantity surveying services; construction contract management and cost reporting to St Georges and final client handover.
The completed building was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde E D Mnangagwa, on 30th November, 2018.
